Adaza Thursday Club celebrates 100th anniversary

All are invited to attend

The Adaza Thursday Club turned 100 years old and they are going to celebrate with an old fashioned potluck noon gathering at the Churdan Legion Hall right off Highway 4 in Churdan on Thursday, Sept. 3.  Everyone, both men and women are welcome, whether you have ties to Adaza or the Adaza Thursday Club.

Back in the 1920’s, farm women had few social outlets and clubs sprung up in neighborhoods to fulfil the need for social and cultural deficiencies. For generations, these neighborhood clubs provided a fun, welcoming place for women to support each other in good times and bad.

The Adaza Thursday Club was created on Aug. 6, 1925, in the home of Ruth Baldridge after the disbanding of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which was their social gathering opportunity. Members the first year included Pauline Earhart, Clara Minnehan, Ruth Baldridge, Bessie Buckmaster, Ida Brewer, Ethel Nesbitt, Lillian Beecher, Eva Lindsey, Irene Johnson, Lana Morgan, Violet Anderson, Ethel Earhart, Rilla Baldridge, Mary Warner Violet Stout and Nadine Spaulding. They elected club officers, set dues at 25 cents and established roll call and programs for upcoming monthly meetings. The first Thursday of each month, excluding the summer months, has continued to be the meeting date for 100 years.

Throughout the years, there have been a lot of laughs, conversations and entertainment. The Adaza Thursday Club has been the setting for music, cake decorating, jewelry making, painting, card games, flower arranging, baby and bridal showers and outing to wineries, greenhouses ad visitations to nursing homes.  Even with everyone’s busy schedules, eight to 10 members make it most months. Among these are generational member representatives Jane (Hardy) Beschorner, Martha (Guess) Hennesey, Ann (Guess) Gemberling, Lou Blanchfield, and Annette Rossmanith. Not many of the social clubs formed in the 1920’s are still active, so join us in celebrating with neighbors and friends for the 100 plus years of the Adaza Thursday Club on September 3 at the noon potluck in Churdan at the Legion Building.  Time tested recipes, with cookies and ice cream, guarantee to please!
